The tournament is being held on Sunday 6th December 2026 10.00 am – approx. 3.30 pm.

Overview

To play in the Under 8, Under 10 or Under 12 Finals you must first qualify either via a qualifying tournament or by ECF rating. Qualification is not required for the older age groups.

Finals

  • 12 & 13 December : U10 and U14
  • 28 – 30 December : U12, U16 and U18 / 21 / Open
  • 29 & 30 December : U8

Qualification for the finals from a qualifying event.

From a qualifying event, these are the scores needed to qualify for the finals:

  • Under 8 – 4 points or more out of 6 qualifies for the final.
  • Under 10 Major – 4.5 points or more out of 6 qualifies for the final.
  • Under 10 Minor – 3.5 points or 4 points out of 6 qualifies for the final.
  • Under 12 Major – 4.5 points or more out of 6 qualifies for the final.
  • Under 12 Minor – 3.5 points or 4 points out of 6 qualifies for the final.

It is also possible to qualify for the Under 12 Finals by doing well in the Under 10 finals as Under 10 finals occur before U12 finals:

  • 4.5 points or more in Under 10 Major finals out of 7 qualifies for the Under 12 Major finals
  • 3.5 or 4 points in the Under 10 Major finals out of 7 qualifies for the Under 12 Minor finals.
  • 6 points or more in the Under 10 Minor finals out of 7 qualifies for the Under 12 Major finals.
  • 4.5, 5 or 5.5 points in the Under 10 Minor finals out of 7 qualifies for the Under 12 Minor finals.

Bracknell Chess Club Qualifying Event

This Qualifying Tournament is open to all entries regardless of home location and is for junior chess players who are younger than 8, 10 and 12 respectively on 31st August 2026.

Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at the event

The tournament will be played in three sections:

  • Under 8
  • Under 10
  • Under 12

Entry

Tournament entry fee is £10. Entries must be sent to Jon Lloyd at infobracknellchessclub@btinternet.com. Please submit email contact address, player name (as given on the ECF database), age, sex, age group that you wish to play in and ECF rating code*. Payment instructions will be sent by return.

*All juniors entering the tournament must be gold members of the ECF. Membership rates & joining details – English Chess Federation. Membership for junior gold is free for the first year.

Photography

No photography is permitted within the playing area during play.

Schedule

The tournament consists of 6 rounds, starting each round shortly after the completion of the previous round.

Each section starts at 10:00 am

Each game will use Fischer timing of 20 minutes + 10 seconds per move

  • 09.45: Parent Introduction
  • 10.00 (prompt) Round 1
  • 11.00: Round 2
  • 12.00: Round 3
  • 13.00: Round 4
  • 14.00: Round 5
  • 15:00 Round 6
  • 16.:00: Prize Giving

Prizes

Bracknell Chess Club Trophies will be awarded to each age group winner and medals presented to juniors who finish if the first three places. Certificates will be given to all entries. Gold pass tickets to the finals will be awarded to qualifiers for the LJCC finals.

Facilities

Play will take place in Hanworth Community Centre and space will be provided for parents separately in the same building. The venue will only accommodate between 35 and 40 entries. The tournament was full more than a week before starting last year, so it is recommended that you apply early for entry.

Tea, coffee, juice and biscuits are provided free of charge. Please bring a packed lunch.
